Decklists For Organizers

This week’s software release provides full decklist submission and validation support for Star Wars: Unlimited and for Magic: the Gathering. This means Melee will validate decklist submissions to ensure they are legal decklists for the specific formats selected. For all other games, players can submit a pasted or uploaded version of their decklists which Organizers can then manually validate for legality. This update makes decklist submission more accessible, flexible, and streamlined than ever before.

Melee’s mission has always been to provide gaming communities with the tools they need to organize and participate in the events they are passionate about. Since the Melee team are all players, judges, and organizers ourselves we launched decklist tools that we knew would make the tournament experience better for organizers and players of Magic: the Gathering, initially. With the significant growth of other games using the Melee platform, we are excited to unveil our biggest update to decklist support yet!

Melee’s User Experience (UX) and Design team have worked together to give our decklist tools a sleek overhaul for a more intuitive experience, based on organizer and player feedback. We’re also expanding our support to ALL games! We now have a multi-tiered support system enabling Organizers to take registration and decklist submission all in one place. Let’s review some details, then we will look at the full scope of changes.

With decklist support now expanded to all games, we’ve updated this functionality so that it’s unchecked by default and moved this to be located in the same section you’ll find naming your tournaments. This means that you’ll now need to check that option for any tournament you want players to submit decklists to. If left unchecked, players will not be able to submit decklists for the tournament.

Last year we introduced the ability for Organizers to type in any name for a game to create a tournament. This led to issues where tournaments for supported games wouldn’t appear in player Find Events Pages when filtered by game name. Instead, we’ve significantly added to our list of games. Please contact us if you’re interested in hosting tournaments for games not currently available.

Now found on the Decklist tab of the Tournament Controller is an in-line editor for decklist name. This will allow you to adjust the name of any decklist submitted to your tournaments by simply typing it in and saving!

We’ve changed how our Decklist Database works to ensure tournament decklists from any Games are able to be viewed by the public.

We learned many lessons the hard way with our initial implementation of our decklist builder that we’ve corrected with this update. We’ve introduced a sleeker design to make decklist submission more intuitive for new users. More specifically:

  • Players and Organizers will use this interface when submitting their own decks or those for their players.
  • Card searches can include the number of cards the player wishes to add to the deck. For example, typing “3 Black Lotus” then submitting will add 3 copies of Black Lotus to the deck.
  • When clicked on, the numbers associated with each card displays a minus and plus sign for easy adjustments to card counts.
  • Validation issues now include detailed error descriptions at both the card and decklist levels, ensuring players can quickly identify and resolve problems..

Similarly to how https://Melee.gg/Players takes any user to their Player Portal for the tournament they are in, https://Melee.gg/Decklist/Form will now take players to their decklist creation/submission page. Here players will be able to see any tournaments they are in that they need to submit a decklist to.

The purpose of this set of updates is to provide event organizers with an improved and more powerful set of decklist tools, which support a greater number of games, and which are easier to use for players, judges, scorekeepers, and organizers. We hope that you find we have met your needs, and achieved our goal. When you have questions and feedback, please reach out to us to discuss by email or Discord.
